Missing Person Monday: The Disappearance of Relisha Rudd

Published on 9 June 2025 at 18:43

“Someone has to know what happened to her. Children don’t just vanish.”

On March 1, 2014, Relisha Tenau Rudd, an 8-year-old girl from Washington D.C., vanished — and nearly a decade later, no one knows where she is.

Her case is a tragic mix of systemic failure, manipulation, and silence — and it's one of the most heartbreaking child disappearances in recent memory.

Who Was Relisha?

Relisha was a bright, shy, and sweet little girl living with her mother and brothers at the D.C. General Homeless Shelter. Her teachers described her as caring and artistic, always smiling — but they also noticed signs of neglect, exhaustion, and hygiene issues.

That’s when Kahlil Tatum entered the picture.

The Dangerous Connection

Tatum was a janitor at the shelter, but he quickly became a disturbing presence in Relisha’s life. He showered her with gifts — a tablet, money, clothes — and was often seen taking her off shelter grounds. Instead of raising red flags, her mother allowed the relationship to continue.

Teachers became concerned when Relisha stopped showing up to school in early March. Her mother claimed she was “sick” and under the care of a “Dr. Tatum.”

There was no Dr. Tatum. Only Kahlil.

Timeline of a Disappearance

  • March 1, 2014: Last known confirmed sighting of Relisha at a hotel with Kahlil Tatum, caught on surveillance footage.

  • March 13: A school social worker finally reports her missing.

  • March 20: Tatum’s wife, Andrea, is found shot to death in a motel room — killed by Tatum.

  • March 31: Kahlil Tatum is found dead by suicide in a D.C. park — just a few days after Relisha’s 9th birthday.

Relisha was never seen again.

Theories and Questions

Despite massive searches, no trace of Relisha has ever been found. Her body has never been recovered. No witnesses have come forward. No one has been charged.

Was she murdered by Tatum and hidden before his suicide?
Was she trafficked, and Tatum’s death part of a cover-up?
Or was she given away or sold, as some investigators fear?

What Went Wrong?

This case exposed disturbing lapses:

  • Why was a shelter janitor allowed unsupervised access to children?

  • Why didn’t school officials act sooner?

  • Why weren’t there stronger child welfare protections in place?

Relisha fell through the cracks of every system meant to protect her.

Final Thoughts

Relisha Rudd should be 19 years old today. But for now, she remains a face on a flyer, a name in cold case files, and a symbol of a broken system that let a child disappear — and left a community without answers.

If you know anything about the disappearance of Relisha Rudd, contact the D.C. Metropolitan Police or submit an anonymous tip to NCMEC.

Because someone, somewhere, knows what happened.
